How to Create a Windows Recovery Drive

How to create a Windows recovery drive. Hi, everyone. Leo Notenboom here for Askleo.com. A recovery drive is a really useful thing to have if you ever run into problems with Windows and you’re unable to boot Windows itself.

A recovery drive is, as its name implies, a separate drive from which you can boot in order to recover your system. It includes an additional set of tools, and in fact, can include an entire copy of Windows in case you need to refresh or reinstall. I’ll walk you through the steps of creating one. Now, today, we’re actually looking at one of my laptops. The issue for me is that I have no way of actually attaching an actual USB drive to my virtual machines.
So, we’re going to do this with one of my laptops where I have, in fact, inserted a real USB drive. That is a requirement.

You will need a USB drive that you can use to be this recovery drive. We’ll click on the Start menu and start searching for Recovery Drive. And as soon as that shows up, of course, click on it.

It does require UAC, we’ll say yes, backup system files to the recovery drive. This basically says, include a backup copy of Windows itself to that recovery drive. This will allow you to later repair Windows if you need to, and potentially even reinstall Windows from scratch. We’ll click on Next. Now it’s going to do a little bit of searching.

It’s actually looking for the drives attached to the system and making sure that you’ve got a USB drive available for this operation. Now, this did take a little while. I suspect it’s actually doing a little bit more than just identifying your USB thumb drives, but thebottom line is this can take a couple of minutes, so don’t worry if that happens. In this case now, I have two available drives here. I have two USB drives.

The top one, my D drive, is literally my backup drive.

It’s where I’ve got, I think it is Macron Reflect on this machine, periodically backing up. However, I have this 16-gigabyte USB also inserted on the machine, we’ll use that. And you can see here, of course, that the drive must be able to hold at least 16 gigabytes, so I’ve got the correct size, and everything on the drive will be deleted. That’s very important to note.
Do not use a drive that you expect to be preserved. If you’ve got data on that drive, then it’s not a drive you want to use. Click on Next. Again, everything will be deleted. This is important to understand.

And yes, we’re going to go ahead and say, That’s fine. And it’s going to go through the process now of creating the recovery drive. In this case, that’s going to take a little bit of time because it’s copying basically a lot of files, including Windows itself.

I suspect that it’s setting up a couple of partitions or at least some folders with the various pieces of information that the recovery drive can use if and when you boot from it. We will let this happen and come back when it’s done.

And we’re back and the recovery drive is ready. Now, I will admit this took a lot longer than I expected it to. Be thankful that I’m able to do a transition position here in the middle. But the fact is it’s filling up a thumb drive with 16 gigabytes of data, a copy of the operating system, recovery partitions, etc. So it’s going to take some time.

I probably just chose a really slow, old thumb drive, but the bottom line is that expect that to take a little bit of time.

So unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to show you what happens when you boot from the recovery drive. But the bottom line is that that’s what you do. You figure out on your machine specifically, how you tell your machine to reboot and use the USB drive to boot from. Then what you will get actually will be something that looks a lot like the recovery screens that you may have seen in Windows settings.

If you’ve gone down to do any of the troubleshooters, command line, restore or reset windows, those screens are typically very similar to what you see on a recovery drive. The important thing here is that the recovery drive includes the tools that you may be able to use to repair windows, diagnose windows, or potentially even reinstall windows completely.

The reason it’s one of those things that you want to make before you need it, of course, is that if your machine isn’t working, then you won’t have the ability to make it when you need it. Now, it is possible that if you have another machine with the exact same version of Windows, meaning Windows 10 or 11, Home or Pro Editions, then you may be able to make a recovery disk on that machine. But it’s better to just have it in case you ever need it.

The other scenario that’s actually very similar to this and may sometimes suffice is if you actually download a Windows installation disk from Microsoft. That too has many of the same tools. Exactly what the differences are, honestly, I’m not really sure, but it is another approach to being able to do this. But my preference is to create the recovery disk and have it ready when you need it. Hope that helps you understand a little bit and be a little bit more prepared for the next time something happens.
