Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) 5 Tracks

If you are a Veteran or service member with a service-connected disability that impacts your ability to work or live independently, the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Veteran Readiness and Employment program, or VR&E, may be able to help.

From reemployment services to employment counseling, professional training, and more, we have five tracks designed to help you find and keep a job and live more independently. Here is what you need to know. As a Veteran, you are protected under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act. This means that you can’t be disadvantaged in your civilian career because of your military service. Our Reemployment track can help you return to the job you held before you deployed. It can also help your employer provide workplace adjustments or reasonable accommodations based on any impact from your service-connected disabilities.

If you want to follow an employment path that uses your existing skill set, the Rapid Access to Employment track might be right for you. We can provide you with tools to help you in your job search as well as professional counseling. With this track, we can also help you write your resume or prepare for interviews to ensure you are relatable to private sector employers who may not have a military background.

If you have the strong desire, skills, and drive to run a successful business of your own, and meet the criteria, you may be interested in the Self-Employment track. Through this track, we can: Analyze your business concept, provide resources to help you develop a proposed business plan, provide training in small-business operations, marketing, and finances, and guide you to the resources you need to implement your business plan. Service-connected disabilities can sometimes make it hard to succeed in your current employment path. If this sounds like you, you may be interested in the Employment Through Long-Term Services track. Pursuing formal education and training can help you find work in a different field that better suits your current abilities and interests. Benefits include a complete skills assessment, career guidance, job-market evaluation, education and training, apprenticeships, volunteer opportunities, and employment assistance.

If you are limited in your ability to perform daily activities or you can’t return to work right away, the Independent Living track may be right for you. Depending on your needs, benefits may include Evaluation and counseling to identify your needs and goals, Referral to support resources, and Evaluation to see if you are eligible for programs that can help you improve accessibility features in your home.

You are eligible to apply for VR&E services if you did not receive a dishonorable discharge and have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10%. If you already have a disability rating, you can apply online at VA.gov. After you apply for VR&E, you will work with one of our Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors to develop a plan that is right for you and put it into action. And don’t worry! Your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor will be with you every step of the way to provide you with ongoing support.
