How Does Acupuncture Work? Dr. Marlena, an Acupuncturist in Chicago Answers Your Email Questions

We’ve been asked lately how acupuncture works from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective. So, I’m just going to go over a basic general definition here. It promotes homeostasis and self-healing within the body, so it basically promotes the body to heal itself.  Now how do we know that? How do we figure out what needs to be done?

There’re many tools that acupuncturist uses to help identify what’s going on and where the imbalances are in the body.

The two most common ones are looking at your tongue and pulse. Now we spend many years studying how to read the tongue and pulse and that basically tells us all different kinds of things. What is stuck in the body? Is it Chi?

Is it blood? Is it other substances and where it might be stuck. We also utilize our interview process by talking to you and hearing your story we want to hear what’s going on from you so that we can paint a picture and put a puzzle together of what’s going on in your body.

Now every treatment is not the same every practitioner is not the same. We all practice different kinds of acupuncture, and do you know different techniques and different styles so no not everything’s the same we use it you know basically what’s good for your body.

I tell my patients a lot I could have five different people coming in for the same complaint  but their treatments might all look different and that’s because we’re treating the whole  body we’re treating you not just the imbalance or you know the chief complaint or the pain you  know we’re treating all of you and that’s how acupuncture Works to heal itself. On the flip side how acupuncture Works in terms of Western medicine or Western explanations is it works on a neurological level and endocrine and immunological level it also works on a cardiovascular level and even into your muscles and gastrointestinal. So what do I mean by that I just said a lot of big words.

When we’re talking about the immune system it increases your immune system response it regulates your hormones it even helps with antibody formation and regulation. In terms of cardiovascular it helps to increase your blood flow it helps to reduce inflammation and just in general restore a healthy flow of blood within the body.

It also stimulates endorphins which are one of the body’s natural painkillers and some you know research has even suggested that it can work up to 10 times more than morphine which is kind of crazy and awesome. It also works in a on your nervous system, so it works on your muscles your nerves and your internal organs. Oh, and it also impacts the neurotransmitters in your body which helps the body cope with stress, depression, any kind of mood imbalances as well as decreasing pain inflammation and edema.
