Home Fire Prevention and Safety Tips

This is Felix. And this is his mobile home! Today, he’s going to teach his grandkids about fire safety. Did you know that most home fires can be prevented? That’s right!

You can protect yourself from most house fires before they happen. Poor mechanical maintenance is the number one cause of house fires. Routine upkeep of water heaters, fireplaces, space heaters, stoves, and electrical systems can prevent unnecessary fire damage. See here? These flickering lights can be a sign of loose wiring.

When the wires are not connected properly, electrical currents traveling through the loose gap can create sparks, which may lead to an electrical fire.

Call a professional to fix the problem right away! Another frequent cause of home fires is simply carelessness. Flammable liquids such as alcohol, gas, aerosol, and lighter fluid should be removed from your home and handled as little as possible. If a flammable item must be kept in your home, keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

Smoke detectors are necessary to alert residents of home fires. Immediate awareness of smoke in your home is crucial for taking action before it’s too late. To make sure your smoke detector is in working order, hold down its button until the alarm sounds.

If needed, use a long object, like a broom, or stand on something secure, like a footstool, to reach the test button. If you don’t hear the alarm after several seconds, you should change the batteries or call an electrician.

A nonfunctioning smoke detector more than doubles the chances for serious injury during a fire. 3, 2, 1 … Nice! It works! Most smoke alarms are good for 10 years. If you aren’t sure how old yours is, check the date of manufacture on the back.

Most house fires start in the kitchen. If a small fire starts, use a fire extinguisher to put it out fast. If you need to use a fire extinguisher, remember the acronym P.A.S.
S. It’s simple! First, PULL the pin and break the seal.

Next, AIM the hose at the base of the fire. Then, SQUEEZE the handle to release the contents while SWEEPING back and forth to cover the entire fire area.

Remember: Pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep! Now, who wants to try it out? Remember, if it is an emergency, don’t try to fight the fire! Find the nearest exit and crawl there; the safest air is 12 to 24 inches off the ground. If your clothes catch on fire, stop, drop, and roll to put out the flames.

Use your hands to cover your face and protect your lungs. And call 911 as soon as you get to safety! Okay Felix, I think that’s about everything! How about we celebrate our new fire prevention knowledge with a scoop of ice cream?

Electrical Safety Basic Training for Non-Electricians Schneider Electric

This electrical awareness video is focused on identifying hazards around electricity on the job-site. All other hazards on the job require the same focus and respect while performing your hazard assessments. And should not be disregarded or have any less importance placed on them. Electricity is all around us. It is an essential element in our daily lives.

Nearly everything we do is connected with electricity. On the jobsite, working around electricity can be very safe when workers properly identify and mitigate the hazards. If hazards are ignored, electricity can strike out, and its effects can be devastating. As with any task on the jobsite, you should never attempt to perform work without the proper training and experience. Only qualified personnel should be involved in the operation or repairs of electrical equipment. Inadequate training, lack of experience, and failure to recognize potential hazards could result in electric shock or arc flash. Electric shock can occur when a worker approaches or contacts exposed energized electrical equipment. Workers’ exposure to electric shock can vary from a tingling sensation to involuntary muscle contraction causing respiratory paralysis, ventricular fibrillation, and severe internal and external burns, and even death.

The victim is also at risk of other serious physical harm such as falling from heights. Arc flash results from two electrical components sustaining an arcing fault.

If conditions are correct an arc flash will result, followed by a blast wave containing molten metal, shrapnel, and toxic gases. No matter the severity, any worker exposed to any level of electrical shock or flash must seek medical attention. While electricity has the power to seriously harm you, the risks of electrical shock can be mitigated. And work can be safely carried out without incident. Electrical safety begins with the proper use of field level hazard assessments, and identifying the potential hazards. Your hazard assessment is the first step in protecting you and everyone else on your job-site from any associated hazards, which may include electric shock. A brief inspection of your job-site will help identify other potential electrical hazards. While performing your walk-through, look, listen, and smell.

This will assist you in identifying the hazards on your site. All power tools and equipment should be plugged into a GFCI, this is a must when working in wet, moist, or exterior locations. Ground-fault circuit interrupters monitor the balance of electricity flow. And can detect even minor imbalances, and will trip, reducing the risk of electric shock. Bump testing the GFCI before for must be done to ensure the unit is functioning properly. By pressing the Test button, the receptacle should trip. Pushing the Reset button should restore power to the GFCI.

If this fails, the GFCI unit is defective, and must be taken out of service. Adequate lighting is a must in your work area. If light levels are too low, additional lighting must be installed on either a temporary or permanent basis. Whenever working directly around electrical equipment, the deenergizing of equipment is the recommended practice. Deenergizing equipment removes the potential for electrical shock as power is removed. This can be achieved with the proper use of a lockout/tagout system. While basic procedures may vary from site-to-site, it is essential for you to understand the lockout/tagout procedure being used at your jobsite. One thing that does not change from site-to-site, however, is that you may never remove another party’s lock in a lockout/tagout system. Before using any electrical cords or tools, always inspect individual items to ensure they are in good working order. Faulty equipment can lead to personal injury and poses a risk to all those on a jobsite.

If items are damaged or are in poor working condition, tag the item, and take it out of service for repair or replacement. Always know the locations of fire extinguishers on your site. These should be rated safe for use with electrical fires. Common practice is the use of a dry chemical type of ABC fire extinguisher. Depending on the type of work you’re doing, a hot work or electrical permit may be required. Always ensure you’re in compliance with your site-specific policies and procedures regarding permitting controls. Always consider overhead hazards in your work area. Power lines are an ever-present danger due to the possibility of electrical or direct contact and should always be marked. High voltage hazards can also be in the ground. Line locates are required by law before any ground disturbance takes place.

Always call before you dig.

Occupational Health and Safety regulate minimum work distances to electrical sources with certain voltages and should be referred to before working near any high voltage sources. It is extremely important to recognize equipment in an abnormal condition such as an open electrical panel, exposed wiring, sparks, smoke, or fire. When you encounter this situation, use the look, listen, and smell approach, as this is an immediate cue that extra caution should be used. And may indicate a potentially dangerous situation is present.

Water or liquids pose additional risk of electrical shock due to high conductivity. The hazard should be removed, only after the area is deenergized. If you recognize a hazard that you cannot rectify, ensure that you ask questions and seek solutions from the appropriate personnel on-site. Do not take it for granted that other workers understand the scope of your work or that there is a potential danger to you or to them. Common PPE requirements on jobsites include cotton or fire-resistant pants. A cotton or fire-resistant shirt with a minimum 6 inch to full length sleeve. Electric shock-resistant or static-dissipative footwear. Type one and two class E and G protective headwear. Additional high vis clothing, safety glasses, and work gloves.

For electrical workers that conduct their tasks around energized equipment, you should be aware of the CSA standards Z462.

Competent workers need to be trained to this standard, which will help identify the hazards associated around electrical sources. What controls can be best used, as well as the additional specialized PPE required, such as arc flash clothing, arc flash face shield, rubber-insulated gloves which include leather protectors, and more. PPE is your last line of defense.

Do not use PPE as a substitute for the opportunity to control or remove existing hazards. In the event that all safeguard systems have failed and a co-worker is being shocked, never come in direct contact with the worker or you may become entrapped in the shock cycle.

If possible, deactivate the power source, and activate your emergency response plan.

Working around electricity can be performed safely and without incident. By executing sound judgment and diligent observations in order to create your field level hazard assessment and by following the proper safe work procedures, you’ll be well on your way to completing your task without incident. Remember the importance of using the proper equipment in good condition. And by wearing the proper personal protective equipment.

By employing all these safeguards, not only will you help keep yourself and your co-workers safe, but you’ll also help ensure that you’ll return safely every day to the people who count on you the most.

Safety Squad Video #4: Bedroom Safety

Hi, Safety Squad, Firefighter Tim here. and today, we’re going to talk about bedroom safety. In the last video, we spoke about what you should do if you hear a smoke alarm going off. Do you remember the phrase I gave you? That’s right!”Get low and go!” Good job. Remember, when we’re inside our home and we see smoke or fire, we need to immediately “get low and go” outside where it’s safe. But what happens if a fire starts in the middle of the night while we’re sleeping? Here’s another phrase I want you to remember.”Close before you doze.” This means that you close your bedroom door before you go to sleep. So why would we do that? Well, if your door is closed, the fire and smoke will have a hard time getting into your bedroom.

By closing your bedroom door every night before you go to sleep, if a fire does start in the middle of the night, you’ll have more time to get to safety.

Fire engineers, who are real life fire scientists, have done many experiments that prove a closed door prevents smoke and fire from entering a room. If lots of smoke and fire and outside your bedroom door, and your door is too hot to touch, don’t open it. We don’t want to crawl through the hot, yucky smoke to look for an exit. In this case, we should stay in our bedroom, we should keep the bedroom door closed. When the door is closed, the fire and smoke will have a hard time getting into your room, and you’ll have plenty of clean air to breathe until help arrives.

Next, we want to go to a window and wave our hands in front of it, if you know how to open the window, open it and start yelling out the window. Firefighters will be walking around the home looking in all the windows for anyone who may need help.

By being close to the window, they’ll be able to see where you are, and then come help you get to safety. It may be scary to wake up with smoke in your home. Remember that firefighters are coming to help you.

They’ll be wearing a helmet and special breathing mask that make them look and sound strange, but this protects from the fire and smoke. It’s important to stay close to the window and not hide anywhere in your bedroom. If you hide under the bed, or in your closet, then firefighters will have a really hard time finding you. So, the best place to be is near the window so that people can see you.

Okay, that’s it!

Great job today. Let’s review everything we learned. Do you remember that phrase I gave you at the beginning? That’s right! “Close before you doze!” This means that you should close your bedroom door before going to sleep. This will help protect you if a fire starts in the middle of the night. Now, if your door is too hot to touch, should you open it? NO! Great job.

If the door is too hot to touch, you should keep it closed and go to a window so that firefighters can see you from the outside of the home. Remember not to hide so that we can easily find you and get you outside to safety. Great job today, Safety Squad, that’s it for today! Stay safe and I’ll see you next time.

BLEPHARITIS Treatment at Home – 3 Blepharitis Home Remedy Tips

If you have ever had red, itchy, dry or irritated eyes a frequent cause of this is something called blepharitis but thankfully there are easy ways to treat blepharitis at home with just using a few simple steps. So, in this video, I’m going to be sharing my three top tips for blepharitis treatment at home. So hit that like button and let’s take a look. Hey, what’s up guys Dr. Joseph Allen here from the Dr Eye Health show thanks so much for joining us and thank you to Eye Love for sponsoring today’s video by sending us out some products to share with you guys as well as for making eye health education possible.

Now when it comes for treatment of blepharitis the following is a combination of what most eye doctors will talk about and the first thing on our list is that of warm compresses.

Now if you’ve ever watched.

The Dr Eye Health show before you know that we’ve shared a lot of tips about doing warm compresses  but warm compresses help for blepharitis because it helps soften up the hard eyelid crusts that  have built up on the eyelashes as well as heat up the oil glands within the eyelid called the  Meibomian glands and this helps melt any of the solidified waxy oils that are trapped in  there and allows them to run smoother.

Now if you’ve never done a warm compress before there are many ways to do it but research has shown that using some form of a hearable eye mask is most effective and that’s exactly why lot of eye clinics will sell hearable eye masks like the medieval mask here. Mainly because it holds the right amount of heat for a long enough time  and you easily just put it in the microwave for about 20 seconds and then you put it into the  washable mask cover which is honestly a pretty nice tip because if you do these over and over  you can build up eyelid crust and skin oils onto the back of the mask and to have something that’s  washable is kind of a nice thing. But otherwise, when it’s warmed up you just put the eyelid mask resting over your closed eyelids for about 10 to 15 minutes and honestly for myself. I find them very relaxing. Some doctors do also advocate for doing a vertical eyelid massage following a warm compress to help express any of those clogged Meibomian glands and if you’re not really sure how to do that I do have an instructional video on that I encourage you to check out if you do want to follow up with that extra step.

Now after doing warm compresses, it’s important to follow up doing eyelid scrubs using a wet washcloth and some form of an eyelid safe and healthy eyelid detergent and the Eye Love of brand here has their hydrate foaming tea tree and face wash which you can technically just put on your fingers and put directly onto your lashes and your eyelids,.

I personally still like to use a wet washcloth just to kind of really scrub along that lash line and break up any of the dead skin cells scales and oils that can build up and cake into those lashes. Alternatively you can also try the pre-moistened eyelid wipes which over  time I’ve honestly become more of a fan of mainly because it’s so simple to use you simply have to  tear it open remove the eyelid wipe you wrap the eyelid wipe around your finger and then you just  have to scrub along the eyelid and your eyelashes. I think the eyelid wipes are definitely the most  convenient because you can take them with whatever you want like if you’re traveling or something  they do help with removing eye makeup and at least with this Mediviz brand you don’t have to wash off  anything afterwards.

Now the third step and is really great for anybody with very sensitive skin or having chronic long-lasting blepharitis tissues is that of using something thing that’s very popular amongst eye doctors and that’s of using hypochlorous acid.

Which is a naturally occurring and safe disinfectant. Now Eye love has their hydrate lid and lash cleanser here which is  a simple spray that works as a great cleanser and it can be used multiple times a day you just spray  it on leave it dry you have no need to rinse it off and it doesn’t cause any burning or stinging  which is super nice now of course there are many different products on the market for cleaning  and taking care of the eyelids but of course in today’s video we did feature products from the.

I love company which if you’ve never heard about them I wanted to feature them today because they  are just a super cool company and I encourage you to check them out it was founded by two  optometrists who really wanted to make the highest quality products possible but also affordable and  using natural ingredients which is all just amazing things so again happy to share them  with you guys so if you want to check out any of the island products that were featured in today’s  video check the YouTube description below I’ll put links to everything there.

Now using the tips for blepharitis here in this video usually does the trick but occasionally people do have more extreme cases and I always encourage you to talk with your local eye doctor to figure out what is best for you when needed eye doctors do occasionally have to prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory  medications along with eyelid hygiene to get things under control. Either way let us know  in the comments section if you’ve ever dealt with red itchy irritated dry eyes and what has helped  the most for you I always think it’s incredible to read the comments and see what people are  talking about otherwise if you want to learn more about blepharitis tips about getting rid of eyelid  styes or dry eye treatments check out some of our other videos in our playlist here.

Otherwise again this is Dr Allen here from the Dr Eye Health show keep an eye on it and we’ll see you soon.

How to Apply Beneficial Nematodes to Control Pests in Your Garden

Good morning gardenerds, I’m Christy Wilhelmi from Gardenerd. And I’m whispering because it’s Sunday morning at dawn, which is the time to apply beneficial nematodes to your garden. So that’s what I’m doing today. I wanted to kind of walk you through the process in case you want to do some of this for yourself. Beneficial nematodes do a number of things.

In fact, they pretty much solve a lot of pest problems in your garden. But the trick is you have to apply at a certain time, and you may have to reapply more than once in order to catch them, to interrupt the life cycle of these various pests that often pupate in the soil. So I’m going to walk you through the process. Here’s how we do it. First up, you’re going to need some way to apply the nematodes to soil surfaces and to leaf surfaces.

So you can do that one of two ways. You can use a hose end sprayer like this or a backpack sprayer which is my favorite thing in the world, because it’s, you know, it’s like the gardening equivalent to power tools. Awesome. You’re going to need a water filter. This is a hose…an inline water filter. Or you can you know fill your vessel from the sink or attach it to your hose for this.

And of course you’re going to need nematodes.

Nematodes come a couple of different ways. Most of the time they come in a powder form that you can scoop into a vessel and fill it with water. Or it comes in a really stinky sponge that you put in a bucket of water and squeeze in order to release the nematodes into the water. So, we’re going to do that and then get moving but first let’s talk about beneficial nematodes and what they do. I’m going to focus on three beneficial nematodes. And by the way it’s nematode like nemesis, not nematode like nemesis. Anyway, beneficial nematodes do a lot for your garden. They target certain pests in the soil and on the leaf surfaces. So, the three that are important are Steinernema feltier, Steinernema carcasses and Hetero rigidities bacteriotherapy.

Steinernema feltier treats armyworms, cutworms, cabbage maggot, coddling moth, corn ear worm, crane flies, cucumber beetles, fruit flies, fungus gnats, raspberry crown borer, thrips, and sweet potato weevil, and so much more. Steinernema carcasses treats cotton bowl worm, cockroaches, cutworm, leaf miners, flea larva, peach tree borers, flea beetles, strawberry root weevils, and a bunch of other stuff. And Hetero rabidity’s bacteriotherapy treats ants, asparagus beetle, borers, Colorado potato beetle, Japanese beetle, June bugs, grapefruit borer, and a whole bunch of other stuff. The important thing to start with is to figure out how much the vessel you’re planning on using covers certain amounts of space in your garden. I know I can fit four gallons in here and with four gallons I can cover the backyard, or the front yard, or my community garden plot. So, I’m going to divide my package of nematodes into three different batches so that I can cover all of those areas.

So, I’m going to divide these each of these because I got all three into my I’m going to do probably a half scoop of each of these, scoop of each of these half tablespoons yeah basically I’m going to do and then that will get me three batches. They are stinky by the way. So these are going to go back in the fridge until I’m ready to do my second batch. Because they’re living organisms and you want them to stay alive and cold and happy until you’re ready to use them again. Okay next, now that this is in here, I’m going to fill this with water and start spraying.

If you use a backpack sprayer, make sure that the nozzle on the end of it is wide enough to release microbes out into the world. Otherwise they’ll just stay in your in your backpack sprayer. It needs to have at least an opening of 400 microns in order to make that work. Sometimes this powder can be a little clumpy so you might need to stir it. It’s going to be a little heavy, it’s okay.

All right. Okay, let’s do this.

Always grab your hose nozzle before you pick up the backpack because you won’t be able to reach it afterwards. So now you pump and get going. This Valencia orange tree has leaf miners, and one of the three types of beneficial nematodes treat them.

Hey Mittens. She seems to be making appearances in my garden more and more; in my garden videos I mean. This is my squash patch and while we haven’t had issues with cucumber beetles and squash beetles here, we have at my community garden plot, so we are treating the soil because they are vectors for bacterial wilt.

Beneficial nematodes also treat coddling moth on the apple tree. And peach leaf curl, and ants, and a bunch of other stuff.

In garden beds it’s important to apply directly to the soil because your seasonal crops are, you know, going to finish up at some point but the soil is always going to be there. look out Mittens. By the way, beneficial nematodes are not going to harm pets. They’re safe for use. You do need to keep the soil moist for the next week or so to let them get going. Don’t let the soil dry out because when soil dries out microbes go dormant or die. Beneficial nematodes are part of any integrated pest management program including compost tea and worm castings. It allows you to get back to gardening and focusing less on treating bugs.
