BLEPHARITIS Treatment at Home – 3 Blepharitis Home Remedy Tips

If you have ever had red, itchy, dry or irritated eyes a frequent cause of this is something called blepharitis but thankfully there are easy ways to treat blepharitis at home with just using a few simple steps. So, in this video, I’m going to be sharing my three top tips for blepharitis treatment at home. So hit that like button and let’s take a look. Hey, what’s up guys Dr. Joseph Allen here from the Dr Eye Health show thanks so much for joining us and thank you to Eye Love for sponsoring today’s video by sending us out some products to share with you guys as well as for making eye health education possible.

Now when it comes for treatment of blepharitis the following is a combination of what most eye doctors will talk about and the first thing on our list is that of warm compresses.

Now if you’ve ever watched.

The Dr Eye Health show before you know that we’ve shared a lot of tips about doing warm compresses  but warm compresses help for blepharitis because it helps soften up the hard eyelid crusts that  have built up on the eyelashes as well as heat up the oil glands within the eyelid called the  Meibomian glands and this helps melt any of the solidified waxy oils that are trapped in  there and allows them to run smoother.

Now if you’ve never done a warm compress before there are many ways to do it but research has shown that using some form of a hearable eye mask is most effective and that’s exactly why lot of eye clinics will sell hearable eye masks like the medieval mask here. Mainly because it holds the right amount of heat for a long enough time  and you easily just put it in the microwave for about 20 seconds and then you put it into the  washable mask cover which is honestly a pretty nice tip because if you do these over and over  you can build up eyelid crust and skin oils onto the back of the mask and to have something that’s  washable is kind of a nice thing. But otherwise, when it’s warmed up you just put the eyelid mask resting over your closed eyelids for about 10 to 15 minutes and honestly for myself. I find them very relaxing. Some doctors do also advocate for doing a vertical eyelid massage following a warm compress to help express any of those clogged Meibomian glands and if you’re not really sure how to do that I do have an instructional video on that I encourage you to check out if you do want to follow up with that extra step.

Now after doing warm compresses, it’s important to follow up doing eyelid scrubs using a wet washcloth and some form of an eyelid safe and healthy eyelid detergent and the Eye Love of brand here has their hydrate foaming tea tree and face wash which you can technically just put on your fingers and put directly onto your lashes and your eyelids,.

I personally still like to use a wet washcloth just to kind of really scrub along that lash line and break up any of the dead skin cells scales and oils that can build up and cake into those lashes. Alternatively you can also try the pre-moistened eyelid wipes which over  time I’ve honestly become more of a fan of mainly because it’s so simple to use you simply have to  tear it open remove the eyelid wipe you wrap the eyelid wipe around your finger and then you just  have to scrub along the eyelid and your eyelashes. I think the eyelid wipes are definitely the most  convenient because you can take them with whatever you want like if you’re traveling or something  they do help with removing eye makeup and at least with this Mediviz brand you don’t have to wash off  anything afterwards.

Now the third step and is really great for anybody with very sensitive skin or having chronic long-lasting blepharitis tissues is that of using something thing that’s very popular amongst eye doctors and that’s of using hypochlorous acid.

Which is a naturally occurring and safe disinfectant. Now Eye love has their hydrate lid and lash cleanser here which is  a simple spray that works as a great cleanser and it can be used multiple times a day you just spray  it on leave it dry you have no need to rinse it off and it doesn’t cause any burning or stinging  which is super nice now of course there are many different products on the market for cleaning  and taking care of the eyelids but of course in today’s video we did feature products from the.

I love company which if you’ve never heard about them I wanted to feature them today because they  are just a super cool company and I encourage you to check them out it was founded by two  optometrists who really wanted to make the highest quality products possible but also affordable and  using natural ingredients which is all just amazing things so again happy to share them  with you guys so if you want to check out any of the island products that were featured in today’s  video check the YouTube description below I’ll put links to everything there.

Now using the tips for blepharitis here in this video usually does the trick but occasionally people do have more extreme cases and I always encourage you to talk with your local eye doctor to figure out what is best for you when needed eye doctors do occasionally have to prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory  medications along with eyelid hygiene to get things under control. Either way let us know  in the comments section if you’ve ever dealt with red itchy irritated dry eyes and what has helped  the most for you I always think it’s incredible to read the comments and see what people are  talking about otherwise if you want to learn more about blepharitis tips about getting rid of eyelid  styes or dry eye treatments check out some of our other videos in our playlist here.

Otherwise again this is Dr Allen here from the Dr Eye Health show keep an eye on it and we’ll see you soon.

How to Apply Beneficial Nematodes to Control Pests in Your Garden

Good morning gardenerds, I’m Christy Wilhelmi from Gardenerd. And I’m whispering because it’s Sunday morning at dawn, which is the time to apply beneficial nematodes to your garden. So that’s what I’m doing today. I wanted to kind of walk you through the process in case you want to do some of this for yourself. Beneficial nematodes do a number of things.

In fact, they pretty much solve a lot of pest problems in your garden. But the trick is you have to apply at a certain time, and you may have to reapply more than once in order to catch them, to interrupt the life cycle of these various pests that often pupate in the soil. So I’m going to walk you through the process. Here’s how we do it. First up, you’re going to need some way to apply the nematodes to soil surfaces and to leaf surfaces.

So you can do that one of two ways. You can use a hose end sprayer like this or a backpack sprayer which is my favorite thing in the world, because it’s, you know, it’s like the gardening equivalent to power tools. Awesome. You’re going to need a water filter. This is a hose…an inline water filter. Or you can you know fill your vessel from the sink or attach it to your hose for this.

And of course you’re going to need nematodes.

Nematodes come a couple of different ways. Most of the time they come in a powder form that you can scoop into a vessel and fill it with water. Or it comes in a really stinky sponge that you put in a bucket of water and squeeze in order to release the nematodes into the water. So, we’re going to do that and then get moving but first let’s talk about beneficial nematodes and what they do. I’m going to focus on three beneficial nematodes. And by the way it’s nematode like nemesis, not nematode like nemesis. Anyway, beneficial nematodes do a lot for your garden. They target certain pests in the soil and on the leaf surfaces. So, the three that are important are Steinernema feltier, Steinernema carcasses and Hetero rigidities bacteriotherapy.

Steinernema feltier treats armyworms, cutworms, cabbage maggot, coddling moth, corn ear worm, crane flies, cucumber beetles, fruit flies, fungus gnats, raspberry crown borer, thrips, and sweet potato weevil, and so much more. Steinernema carcasses treats cotton bowl worm, cockroaches, cutworm, leaf miners, flea larva, peach tree borers, flea beetles, strawberry root weevils, and a bunch of other stuff. And Hetero rabidity’s bacteriotherapy treats ants, asparagus beetle, borers, Colorado potato beetle, Japanese beetle, June bugs, grapefruit borer, and a whole bunch of other stuff. The important thing to start with is to figure out how much the vessel you’re planning on using covers certain amounts of space in your garden. I know I can fit four gallons in here and with four gallons I can cover the backyard, or the front yard, or my community garden plot. So, I’m going to divide my package of nematodes into three different batches so that I can cover all of those areas.

So, I’m going to divide these each of these because I got all three into my I’m going to do probably a half scoop of each of these, scoop of each of these half tablespoons yeah basically I’m going to do and then that will get me three batches. They are stinky by the way. So these are going to go back in the fridge until I’m ready to do my second batch. Because they’re living organisms and you want them to stay alive and cold and happy until you’re ready to use them again. Okay next, now that this is in here, I’m going to fill this with water and start spraying.

If you use a backpack sprayer, make sure that the nozzle on the end of it is wide enough to release microbes out into the world. Otherwise they’ll just stay in your in your backpack sprayer. It needs to have at least an opening of 400 microns in order to make that work. Sometimes this powder can be a little clumpy so you might need to stir it. It’s going to be a little heavy, it’s okay.

All right. Okay, let’s do this.

Always grab your hose nozzle before you pick up the backpack because you won’t be able to reach it afterwards. So now you pump and get going. This Valencia orange tree has leaf miners, and one of the three types of beneficial nematodes treat them.

Hey Mittens. She seems to be making appearances in my garden more and more; in my garden videos I mean. This is my squash patch and while we haven’t had issues with cucumber beetles and squash beetles here, we have at my community garden plot, so we are treating the soil because they are vectors for bacterial wilt.

Beneficial nematodes also treat coddling moth on the apple tree. And peach leaf curl, and ants, and a bunch of other stuff.

In garden beds it’s important to apply directly to the soil because your seasonal crops are, you know, going to finish up at some point but the soil is always going to be there. look out Mittens. By the way, beneficial nematodes are not going to harm pets. They’re safe for use. You do need to keep the soil moist for the next week or so to let them get going. Don’t let the soil dry out because when soil dries out microbes go dormant or die. Beneficial nematodes are part of any integrated pest management program including compost tea and worm castings. It allows you to get back to gardening and focusing less on treating bugs. Dry Eye Treatments You Can Do At Home!

Hi, I’m Dr. Michele Lee, a board-certified ophthalmologist, and in this video, we are going to talk about five dry eye treatments you can do at home and without a prescription – all natural, safe, and effective. Before I get started, please like and subscribe to my channel, where I post a new video every Saturday about eye health and disease. The first dry eye treatment that you can do at home is to apply a warm compress to your eyelids. There are certain conditions, like ocular rosacea, where you may want to use this treatment sparingly, but for most cases of dry eye this can be very helpful.

Warm compresses help with blocked meibomian, or oil, glands that we all have on our upper and lower eyelids. The lack of oil in our tear film causes quick evaporation of our tears that can lead to a type of dry eye where you make tears but not good quality tears that don’t really do a good job lubricating your eyes.

My first tip for this is to use warm, not hot, compresses. Check the temperature with the back of your wrist or elbow to make sure you don’t burn your eyelids. You want to make sure you have at least 5 minutes of heat to your eyelids per session, and I would recommend you do these one to two times a day for best results. There are a few ways you can make a warm compress. You can use a clean washcloth and run warm water from your sink, bath, or shower and apply the washcloth directly on your eyelids, rewetting with warm water when needed. A more elegant way to do a warm compress is to buy a special eye mask. I recommend the Dr. Bruder mask, and I’ve linked this down below.

A poor man’s version of this mask is to use a clean tube sock, fill it with rice, and tie the end with a string. You can microwave the mask or sock contraption for 20-30 seconds and apply to your eyelids, with or without a thin towel in between the warm mask and your eyelids.

This contraption will retain heat longer than a wet washcloth.

The next dry eye treatment is to work on creating an environment that is helping, not hurting, your eyes. I live and practice in Arizona, which is one of the driest states in the United States, and almost every patient I see here has some degree of dry eye just from living in such a dry climate. I frequently recommend getting a humidifier at home or at work to moisten the environment and help decrease evaporation of tears from the eye. Another important tip is minimizing air conditioners, heaters, and fans blowing directly into the eyes since these will really dry out your tears and worsen your dry eye symptoms! You should also consider changing your diet to help with your dry eye symptoms.

The easiest thing you can do is to drink more water and stay hydrated. Also, while controversial at the moment, I don’t think it would hurt to eat foods with more omega-3 fatty acids and flaxseed oil, since there is some evidence that this change can make a difference for some cases of dry eye.

Another important treatment is giving your eyes a chance to rest. Not only should you be getting a good night’s sleep, when we are reading or on the computer or phone, we are staring a lot and our blink rate goes down. This can cause tears to evaporate from your eyes and can really dry out your eyes and blur your vision.

The easiest thing you can do is to close your eyes for a few seconds when your eyes start to feel tired or dry. This gives your tears a chance to lubricate your corneas, and your eyes get a chance to rest.

The most important dry eye treatment I have is to lubricate your eyes with over-the-counter preservative-free tears and ointments. This is going to be the first treatment your eye doctor will suggest for any dry eye symptom, and preservative-free artificial tears are extremely safe and effective for pretty much all types of dry eye. Also, if you wake up in the morning with eye pain or irritation, or sleep with your eyes partially open, you might be drying out your eyes at night. I would recommend an ointment or gel. You can put a small amount, about the size of a grain of uncooked rice, in this inner pocket between your eye and lower eyelid right before you go to sleep.

This will make your vision blurry and your eyes sticky when you blink, so this is best done right before you go to sleep or take a nap. If all of these at-home tips and tricks fail, it is time to see your eye care provider since we have a lot of great treatments available to help with your unique case of dry eye.

Do you have dry eye, and has there been a treatment or lifestyle change that has worked well for you? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for watching my video, remember to like and subscribe, and I’ll see you in my next video.
Bye!

How to Fall Asleep Faster: CBT-Insomnia Treatment

Hi, everyone. I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I make mental-health education videos. If you were to ask someone, “What’s causing your insomnia?”  they might say something like, “Oh, my stress, my anxiety, my brain won’t shut off.” Maybe they think it’s their cat waking them up or they drank too much coffee or watched a scary movie before bed. And granted, all of these things can mess with your sleep for a night or two or more, but they aren’t the thing that causes chronic insomnia.

So, in most cases, chronic insomnia is caused by one bad habit where you accidentally trained your brain not to sleep.  The bad habit is staying in bed awake. This is the worst thing you can do for your insomnia, and its key to one of the most effective treatments for insomnia, CBTI, an evidence-based treatment for insomnia that has shown up to 80% effectiveness at relieving insomnia.

You see,  when you lie in bed awake – maybe you went to bed too early or you’re trying to force yourself to  sleep – and you’re worrying about all the things you know what you said that day and what’s going  to happen with your job and whether that one guy likes you or any of any number of other things,  you’re basically training your brain that the bed is the place for worrying and lying there awake.

 This is a paired association.

It’s like Pavlov’s dogs – they learned to salivate when the bell rang, even when there wasn’t any food around. When you lay in bed awake, your brain learns that the bed is the place for worrying, for thinking, for watching shows, for doing homework, whatever it is that you’re doing. You lay down in bed, and your brain thinks, “Oh, I know this place.

This is the thinking place.” So, without realizing it you trigger that worry reaction, and then it takes hours to fall asleep. So, one aspect of the most effective treatment for insomnia is if you can’t sleep, get out of bed. If you can’t sleep and it’s been more than 15 minutes, get out of bed.

Do something that’s not too stimulating, and then when you start to feel drowsy, go lay back down.

Now, I know this sounds miserable. You’re probably thinking, “Oh, I’m just going to be so tired, and this will just make it worse.” And yes, that’s true. You may be more tired in the short term. But within a week or so it’s most likely going to improve your sleep efficiency.
So that’s the percentage of time that you spend in bed actually sleeping. So just remember this, right? Get up, hang out, try again. Right? Get up, go sit quietly in another room, hang out, do nothing or, you know, read a soothing book.

If you lay there for more than 15 minutes, get back up, hang out, and then try again when you feel sleepy. Now, while this feels miserable, it works really well. You may feel sleep-deprived for a couple of days, but in the long run it’s very effective at treating insomnia. Getting out of bed does two things, right? It retrains your brain that the bed is for sleeping and no other stuff, and then it also builds up like this sleep pressure basically, that tired feeling, so that when you do lay down you’ve got more internal drive to sleep, and you fall asleep faster.

And again, that retrains your brain that the bed is for sleeping. So, as you retrain your brain, you’ll fall asleep faster, you’ll stay asleep longer, and you’ll spend less time lying awake getting angry that you’re not sleeping. And again, this is  a core principle of CBTI: it literally rewires the brain to sleep better. They have imaging studies showing that after CBTI, people have improved cognitive functioning, decreased stress, and improved memory. And most importantly, you sleep better. Okay. Thanks for watching and take care.

A Natural Way to Get Rid of Ants in Your House

If you have ants in your pants, that normally means you can’t sit still and have too much energy. Or it might mean you actually do have ants in your pants, and that’s highly creepy. Now, when ants start an invasion of your home and yard, you got to be prepared to fight them off. If you aren’t a huge fan of chemical pesticides (and I hope you aren’t, since they can be harmful for humans) – there are natural ways to get rid of those annoying insects and keep them out for good.

1. Citrus fruits You might love the smell of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, but ants just can’t stand it! Use this knowledge to your advantage and leave some ground, dried citrus peels near entry points to the house, in flower beds, and in potted plants to scare away ants. Spraying openings, sinks, counters, and table tops with pure lemon juice or even lemon scented cleaner day by day should also bring visible results. Ants will lose their sense of tracking and won’t be able to detect the odors of food particles and residue they’re naturally attracted to.

2.Cucumber slices Similar to citrus fruits; cucumbers smell like trouble to ants. Apparently, there’s something in their chemical composition that eliminates the fungi that ants love a lot. So find the hot spots in your house where ants are most frequently visiting; normally around food and water, and also any gaps, crevices, and holes. Leave some cucumber peels or slices in these places. This is a quick and temporary solution for visible ants but make sure to remove the cucumbers after a few hours since you don’t want to attract cockroaches, which aren’t afraid of them!

3.Peppermint If you have ants in your kitchen and bathroom, you can repel them using peppermint essential oil. Sprinkle cotton balls with a few drops and leave them in areas where the ants hang out. You can also mix equal parts mint scented liquid soap and water in a spray bottle and then spray it directly onto a group of ants. Believe me, they won’t like it.

4. Cinnamon works as a double agent: it makes your house smell like a dream and helps you defer ants at the same time. Powder, oil, and sticks are all good for this purpose. You can just sprinkle your regular kitchen spice at entry sites to disrupt the ants’ route. You can draw a dry cinnamon barrier line, or a cinnamon oil line, with a cotton swab. If you mix cinnamon oil with water in a spray bottle and sprinkle it on ant trails, windows, doors and cracks, it’ll have an even stronger effect. Cinnamon sticks casually thrown around the hot spots will also do the trick.

5. Coffee grounds Before you throw away used coffee grounds after you enjoy a hot cup, remember they can, in fact, be of good use to you. Put them right in the cracks, sprinkle them around the flower bed, or even the entire base of your house (you’ll need a lot of coffee for that). Ground coffee will be even more effective if you mix it with a few drops of peppermint essential oil and spread it on counter tops, near the garbage can, and other places ants love to frequent.

6. Tansy flowers might look cute to you but not to the ants! Plant it near your front door, under full or indirect sun and in pretty dry soil, or among other plants you want to protect from ants. You can also keep dried tansy flowers by the windowsills to repel those nasty insects.

7. Diatomaceous earth Food grade diatomaceous earth is a fine silica powder of fossilized algae. It’s perfectly safe for humans, but dangerous for insects. Sprinkle an ant trail or the perimeters of your house with it for instant anti-ant results. Make sure you keep it dry or it won’t work. You might have to add more than one layer for the best outcome. If you decide to put it in a flower bed, watch out for petals – bees won’t be able to do their job if they encounter this substance.

8. Chalk No ant shall pass a border made of chalk, since they can’t walk across powdery materials. It also messes up their scenting abilities. So, draw a line around your front and back doors, and windowsills. You can ask your kids to do it to make it more fun.

9. Baking soda and powdered sugar Ants love sugar but can’t stand baking soda. The smell of sugar will attract them, and baking soda will say “hi” to their digestive system, and the results are pretty dramatic for them. Mix the ingredients in a 1 to 1 ratio, ¾ tablespoon of each should be enough for it to work. You can put the bait on a jar lid, or directly into areas that ants love. The insect won’t know the difference between the sugar and baking soda, and you already know what’s going to happen.

10. Cornmeal isn’t the quickest way to ruin an ant colony, but it’s completely harmless to humans and super cheap, so you might want to give it a go. Sprinkle it on ant trails and nests. The insects will see it as food and have a feast, but they won’t be able to digest the meal.

11. Vinegar Another affordable thing ants totally hate is vinegar.

Mix it in a 1 to 1 ratio with water in a spray bottle.

You can spray it onto the ants, around the windowsills, doorways and places that ants love.

You can even wash floors, windows, and countertops with this solution – this way you’ll get them both super clean and ant-free. And, there’ll be no scent left behind after it dries.

12. Borax, water and sugar Make a thin paste of powdered Borax laundry booster, sugar and water in equal parts.

Put a few tablespoons of it on a jar lid and set the bait. This solution attracts all possible kinds of ants with its sugary smell. They’ll want to eat it, so they’ll bring it back to the colony and ingest it there. You can experiment with the ingredients a bit and add a touch of peanut butter to make the mix even more attractive for the insects. (Who doesn’t like peanut butter?) The paste dries in a couple of days, so if it hasn’t worked by then, you’ll have to make some more of it. The mix is also effective against cockroaches. However, you should be careful with this solution if you have kids or pets in the house.

13. Boiling water and dish soap Another ant secret they don’t want you to know is that they just hate hot water. Yes, something as simple as that makes them tremble with fear. A spray bottle with water and liquid dish soap can help you get rid of visible ants. And even just pouring a kettle of boiling hot water directly onto their colony is more powerful than you can imagine. It will also kill the weeds if you have any in the sidewalk cracks.

One thing you have to remember, though, is that it can kill the good plants, so watch out for those as you’re pouring hot water onto your yard.

14. Mini moat Most ants just go for the food, but some love plants, both potted and planted ones. To prevent them from building a home in what’s adding aesthetics to your own home, try setting up a moat filled with water, much like people did in ancient times building fortresses. Put the container with plants on a tray filled with water. You can sprinkle cinnamon powder in it for an even stronger effect, or put a cinnamon stick directly into the soil.

The same moat trick will work with pet food bowls. Set the bowl in the center of a tray or lid that’s larger in size so that it’s surrounded by the water. Ants can’t swim, so they won’t be able to get inside the bowl. And of course, once you’ve succeeded, your can sing the Dead Ant song, which goes like this: Dead Ant, Dead Ant, Dead Ant-Dead Ant-Dead Ant… Hey don’t make fun — that was a big hit in 3rd grade! So Have you tried any of these solutions, or maybe you know some others that work?
