There are several DNS options available to our customers. These options include Basic DNS, Web Hosting DNS, Custom DNS, and Premium DNS. In this video, we’re going to briefly explain each one, and when to use it. You can find your DNS options on the Domain.
Details page of your Namecheap account. Just navigate to the ‘Domain’ tab in the menu on the left and go to your ‘Nameservers’ drop-down menu.’Namecheap Basic DNS’ is the default option. When your domain name is pointed to our Basic DNS, it means that your DNS zone can be managed from your Namecheap account.
You can use this option to create host records, which make the connection between your domain name and its IP address. Just go to the ‘Advanced DNS’ tab to create your host record. ‘Namecheap Web Hosting DNS’ is used if you have a shared hosting plan with us and want to connect your domain name to your hosting account – please see our separate video on this.
Once the nameservers are changed to Webhosting, you can add different types of host records through your hosting cPanel account. Again, see our separate videos to find out exactly how. The ‘Custom DNS’ option is used if you wish to point your domain to custom nameservers.
Just enter the personal DNS servers or the hosting nameservers of your third-party provider. Then simply hit the green checkmark to save the changes.
You can then manage your DNS through your provider.
Please also be sure to use the nameservers provided by your hosting or DNS provider – not the IP address. We’ll use ‘ns1.nameserver.com’ and ‘ns.nameserver.com’ as examples here.
The final DNS option is ‘Namecheap Premium DNS’ which is a subscription-only DNS service that can be used with any domain registered at any registrar.
Please note, that DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to fully update within the system.
