I learned a system for remembering everything

Imagine being able to pick up any book, read it, and remember almost everything from it. This kind of superpower memory recall might feel like fiction, but there are people in the real world that seem to carry an incredible ability to hold on to information and I’m definitely not one of them. I’ve read hundreds of books, blogs, and newsletters, but my ability to recall any of it is terrible. So, I decided to finally look into this blind spot; to learn about how the smartest people in the world remember information and to uncover their systems so I can use them for myself. This video is brought to you by Squarespace; I’ll talk more about them later in the video.

If I were to show you a non-fiction book that you’ve read over the past year, whether it was for school, work, or your own personal development, how likely are you to be able to remember five facts from the book? How well could you explain the book to someone else? All right, let me give this a try for myself. “Steal Like an Artist” being creative means getting inspired by other people and you should steal like an artist. It’s really a book about- (lip trills) I just read this book so this one’s a little bit unfair.

What else was it? What else was in this book? Great ideas are really simple and clear. I think that’s all I got. I can’t even remember one of the 48 laws. I just read it; I just read this book like a month ago. There’s not much of a point of reading non-fiction books, particularly books about personal development if you’re not actually going to absorb and implement the insights, but remembering everything might be a bit of a stretch for the average person. After some research, I discovered that our ability to remember things varies wildly from person to person. Some have terrible memories, others exceptional, and even others have photographic memories. As you might have guessed, the average memory is body, messy, and often unreliable.

It’s easier for us to remember events that provide a deviation from our typical sensory experience. Like getting hit in the face with a ball, that interesting thing you learned from that self-help book, not so much, but my question is can we change that? I knew exactly who I needed to speak with. I read online that you’ve read over 3,000 books is that true? – I don’t know, I think it’s probably bad form to count, you know, like with the romantic partners.

I don’t know about you, but that number, well, it wouldn’t take me very long to add up. Ryan Holiday is the international bestselling author of great books like “The Obstacle Is the Way” and “Ego Is the Enemy” and while I can’t remember much of what I read in these books, I do remember them being really good. Ryan, thanks so much for being here. – Of course. One of the things that I was struck by when I first interviewed Ryan back in 2019, was his memory recall.

He pulled quotes and stories effortlessly from the books that he’s read over the years. – Eisenhower, he had this line, he said, “William James talked about this. I have a quote in the intro from Blaise Pascal. Buddha and Marcus Aurelius and Seneca and Confucius and-I seriously needed to know his secret. So, I jumped on a video call with him so we could get to the bottom of it.

One of the main reasons why I wanted to chat with you is because I have this problem where I read a non-fiction book and then I completely forget about everything. Like I can look at that book and be like, “I don’t remember one or two things from this book.” How can we get better at remembering what we read and putting into practice what we read? – First off, I’d be a little kinder to yourself. Having one or two things that you take from a book, if those are important things that could change your life, you know, you paid $11 for this book like is it so bad that you only got two life changing things from it, right?

So, like I think sometimes people are like, “I don’t have perfect recall of the book,” I mean, the book was supposed to take you on a journey and leave you with something. I started in publishing as a research assistant. I work for this amazing author named Robert Greene and he showed me a way of reading that I practice to this day that I think could be valuable, which is basically, as I read a book, I fold pages as I’m reading and then I make notes to myself. I’m highlighting the things that I’m liking and then what I do as a writer because I want to use a lot of this information is I then transfer the stuff that I really liked or that really impacted me and I put them on note cards and so I just write the thought that I had that it inspired or I write down the story and then I sort those note cards by theme. So, I’m kind of creating like an exterior brain that organizes the stuff that I took from the books.

So, I decided to put Ryan’s system to the test and try it out for myself and what better book to start with than “Courage Is Calling,” that’s Ryan’s latest book by the way. All right, so I’ve got my tools here, highlighter, pen, my post it bookmarks here, and a stack of note cards and, of course, my book, let’s see how this works. So, when you really break down Ryan’s system, there are three main parts. First, take notes while you read, second, revisit and revise your notes when you’re finished with the book, and third, categorize and file your notes. The reason why this kind of system is so effective at helping us retain more of what we read comes down to how our brains process information.

Over time, we’ve developed a sorting process to help us determine what information to hold onto in our explicit memory. That’s the type of long-term memory that’s concerned with recollection of facts and events. Thanks to what’s known as heuristic memory processing, we tend to prioritize information that is frequently used, recently used, or likely to be needed to make decisions. So becoming a better learner is all about putting in the work, reading, taking notes, studying, and making use of the information that you’re taking in. In other words, having a system like Ryan’s and while Ryan said that he enjoys audiobooks and eBooks, he thinks that there’s an advantage to going analog.

I do tend to find that people who are like, “Oh, I listen to a lot of audiobooks or I listen to- I read a lot of eBooks,” the recalls not there. They’re like, “I do my highlights, but they just go somewhere on my computer.” I think there is something about getting away from the screen, sitting down, and engaging deeply with the world in front of you. All right, so I have completely finished reading “Courage Is Calling” and I have taken extensive notes throughout. So, I am a slow reader in this process of taking thorough notes throughout the entire book, definitely slow me down even more probably by 30 or 40%, but the idea is that hopefully, this will make these memories and ideas just a little bit stickier.

Now, I need to go through this entire book and take all of my notes, all of the best notes that I’ve taken and put them down onto these note cards. So, this video is sponsored by my friends over at Squarespace. I’ve been using Squarespace for nearly a decade for one main reason, they make it insanely easy for me to bring my ideas to life, let me show you what I mean. Let’s say that you’ve got an idea for a website where you teach people how to improve their memory. You start off by going to squarespace.com to grab your new domain name, mattrememberseverything.com. Next, you browse through dozens of beautifully designed templates to find the one that feels the most like you and then the fun part begins. With a few clicks, you can add a hero image to your homepage, you can start your very own newsletter, and outline your core business offerings. You could even start doing online coaching and earn money through your very own E-commerce store.

You could call them Memory Mentorships. You know, that’s actually a really good idea, let me write that down. With Squarespace, you can scale your business with detailed analytics, scheduled posts, and so much more. It’s never been easier to build a website to share your special gift with the world. Visit squarespace.com today for a free trial and when you’re ready to launch, go to squarespace.com/Mattarella to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. When you support Squarespace by clicking the link in the description down below this video, you’re also supporting my channel so thanks for considering.

So now, that I’ve gotten two thirds of the way into this note taking experiment, it’s become clear that this is a very slow and methodical process. If you’re anything like me, this can make you feel a bit antsy, but what I continue to remind myself is that this isn’t about becoming superhuman and devouring books in a day. It’s about taking the time to digest the information, think critically about it, and to try to find ways to reuse and repurpose what I’m learning and really more importantly to actually enjoy the process. – Reading is a pleasurable activity, I enjoy doing it and so you would never hear someone be like, “Dude, I have the fastest sex you would not believe it,” right? Or like, “You should see how fast I can scarf down food at this fancy restaurant.” I’m having a conversation with Ernest Hemingway or Marcus Aurelius or Doris Kearns Goodwin; these are like the best people in the world at what they do. I winna enjoy that like I’m going to take my time doing it.

So, I have finished taking the best ideas, note stories, and quotes from this book and put them down onto about 20 to 30 note cards and now, is the point in the process where I need to go through and organize all this. One thing that I’ve realized from this process is that you don’t remember things by accident, which means I need to systematize and organize all of these notes into different buckets, categories, and themes. It’s probably too early to tell whether this system will improve my memory in the long run. I have a feeling I’m still gonna be on the goldfish end of the memory scale, but I’ve learned something even more important over the past few weeks of following this system. You actually can’t remember everything you want to, you just need to store it outside of your brain.

Oh, and if you’re wondering whether I’ll keep this up myself, maybe, but I don’t know if it’ll look exactly like this. I don’t know how many boxes of note cards I can have at my place and still keep my sanity. How many boxes of note cards do you have? – Well, at least one for every single book that I’ve written, but I’m looking I have one, two, three, four, five, six, I have seven in my office right now. My system is an amalgamation combination of Rob Greene’s and yours can be your own spin on mine.

Whether you decide to follow an analog system like Ryan’s or go digital, the important thing is to just get started. – You’re better off starting imperfectly than being paralyzed by the hope or the delusion of perfection. My system has evolved over the years, it will continue to evolve. Maybe there’s some version in the future where it does become digital, but right now, this is what works for me and the main thing is that I’m doing it always and I’m getting better as I go. – Thanks so much for watching this video, if you liked it, don’t forget to hit Subscribe and especially that little Notification Bell so you get future videos from me that way you don’t have to work too hard to remember to watch my videos later.

By the way, my exploration into memory and learning is only just beginning. Stay tuned in a couple weeks for new video about how to build a second brain by taking all the information we consume and putting it into an intelligent digital system. – It’s the complete ecosystem of apps that you use to manage information. Thanks for watching and I’ll catch you next time.

How To Generate Traffic to the Website’s that you’re Promoting When it comes to your efforts for generating traffic to your website, you can never do too much to get it. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and there is more than one way to get website traffic. This section is going to show you what they are. So why wait; let’s get right to it because this section is a perhaps the most important one. It likely makes more sense to begin at the top.
For starters, you can start to generate traffic with Sub-domains. Sub-domains are websites that are located within a directory of your main site and have their own domain name. This method is a chosen method of webmasters because it is simple to do. Because sub-domains use the same resources as the main website, they are normally much cheaper than getting another hosting account, however it does require more bandwidth use. Their low cost and flexibility make sub-domains a great way to direct traffic to your site without overstretching your budget.

When you use Sub-domains as Portal Sites, you should know that one of the best uses of sub-domains is portal websites. Portal websites are sites that link to your main website and have a similar theme, for example, if your website is about selling cars, your portal website would be about car parts. Basically, they provide another portal, or doorway, for visitors and search engines to get to your main website. So if someone input a query about car parts, the search engines would send them to your website that is about cars. Do you see what I mean?

Since creating content for a website takes time, often webmasters simply modify the existing text of the main site and reuse it on the portal site. It is important that the content is not exactly the same and that the portals do not just redirect the visitor’s to the main site. Otherwise, search engines may not index them. Portal websites can be submitted to the search engines just like your main site. What this means is that the more portals you have, the more visitors you will get.

If your website is doing alright in the search engines, then imagine having five more websites out there for the spiders to find. Five more listings mean that Web surfers have five times as many ways to find your network of websites. You still with me? Portal websites are just like sub-domains, but they do not have their own URLs, so it is actually cheaper than subdomains. Search engines and links go hand in hand. More and more search engine spiders or robots are taking into consideration the number and ranking of sites that are linked to you. By linking your sub-domains to your main site and to each other, the ranking of all of your sites is going to be greatly improved. Banner Exchange Programs are an extremely popular way to get traffic to your website. Banner exchange programs allow members to share advertising space on each other’s websites. Banner exchanges also help you to bring in new clients and customers that you may not have already had.

It is like I said in the first few sections; they are a great way to generate traffic to your website, but you may not want to clutter your main site with ads due to loading issues, so you have to be careful. Remember the earlier sections that explained the graphical issues that can slow downloading times of your website and force visitors to shut your site down. Portal websites provide a good place to test different programs and direct the resulting traffic to your main site. You must also try to find Alternative Markets if you want to get your website out there. Search engine spiders will pick up on content variations among your websites.

Subtle differences could place a site in a category that you had not thought of and open up an entirely new base of visitors and/or customers. This is again along the lines of finding and writing keyword rich articles etc. that will draw in and attract people to your wares that may not have been looking. For example, when your site is about car parts and you place reviews about cars and articles about cars on your website, it varies your site information enough to draw in potential car buying customers as well. If you are affiliated to a car merchant, this could really boost both of your business. It falls into the category of becoming affiliated with “like” sites. Product and Service Specialization is going to be a great asset to your website’s traffic. Your main website may have dozens of different products and services. This is great for your business, but when your website is only general, it can hurt your ranking in the search engines. That is why you must focus on one specialization with your website.

Specializing allows you to set yourself up as an authority on the product is service that you are selling. Using sub-domains to create sites that specialize in one product or service increases your keyword density and improves your ranking. Plus, many consumers would prefer to work with a specialized business than a one-stop shop because when you are selling everything, it tells them that you are an authority on nothing! Believe me, this is not going to help you in the long run. Text Link Ads One of the most successful forms of advertising today is text link ads. They are a bit friendlier for your bandwidth, and they don’t take up a lot of space. They can be easily implemented into most page layouts with little effort. Good text links ads offer some information as to why your web site visitor should investigate the offer that is being advertised rather than just saying buy me. A company that wishes to make an advertisement should also supply you with very short text links which only state the product or company name. The reason for this is so that you can implement the links directly into the content of related keyword articles and reviews.

This form of web site advertising is a bit time-consuming since it is so hands on, so you really have to choose your products carefully. The information that you supply to your web site visitors will help them make their choices so you have to be honest in your sales copy. If you are successful in this promotion strategy, over time your reviews won’t be seen as hype and bluster, but as a reliable source of information that visitors depend on. Email Hot Lists are another great way of generating traffic to your website and sell services. What they are is just another form of contact information that you can use to get and keep in touch with new clientele. Using hot lists is not the same thing as a contact list. Email hot lists are things that you pay for from other companies that contain the email addresses of people who are looking to buy or are buying items just like those that you are selling. They are called hot lists because there is no guess work here. Your contact list is from people that meet your targeted audience already. That is why it is so important for you to know who you are trying to sell to.

Building an Email hot list Are you reluctant to use unsolicited email to contact new prospects? You should be. The last thing you want to do is make all of your potential clients mad launching terrible ‘flame campaigns’ against you or your company or worse…. about your affiliates. My advice is to not get involved with anything that even resembles spam. However, if you use email lists properly, and in a non-intrusive way, you can make a lot of money and keep perfectly safe in the process. In this section we’ll reveal how to use email to your profitable advantage, without getting flamed. The Right Way to Use Email for Marketing There is only one ‘right’ way to use email lists for marketing purposes and that is to use it with a list of prospects who have contacted you first. This is what is called an Opt-In list. What it means is the consumers have opted to include their email address in a mailing list which means that your mails are not considered spam because they were ‘opted’ for.

Here’s why… Your contacts will not complain about receiving valuable information from you. They welcome the opportunity to receive many different types of emails such as: ‘last minute’ reminders special offers hot information about new products news ‘from the very hub’ of their industry product/website updates even links to affiliate ‘like’ sites Here are some more key tips to keep in mind when trying to build your own email hot list.

How to repurpose YouTube videos, audio + more

How can you spend less time creating new content while maximizing the impact of a single blog post, podcast or video? Details inside this video! Hey, it’s Chia from Brand24 and today I want to talk about repurposing your content. So, whether you’re starting with a blog post, podcast or video – finding ways to repurpose it is a good way to get the most mileage out of your content and all the time and resources that you invested in creating it. Plus, sharing your content through different mediums and platforms maximizes the number of people who get to see and hear it.

And since everybody absorbs content best in different ways, this makes your message a lot more accessible to a much wider audience. So, it is a no-brainer: if you create content, then you should be repurposing it – the only question is ‘how’ and are there any restrictions? So, we’ll go over the ‘how’ in just a moment, but first, the main rule of thumb for repurposing content! Taking a single piece of content and repurposing it in, let’s say,3 different ways is generally less time-consuming than creating 3 brand new articles, videos or podcast episodes. However, this doesn’t mean that you should repurpose every single piece of content that you have.

Stick to repurposing “evergreen” materials that people will be interested in for years to come. Basically, you can skip real-time content like a special event to celebrate your bakery’s 5th year of business – and stick to repurposing more evergreen topics, like ‘how to bake the perfect birthday cake’ or ‘where to find the best bakeries’ – things like that. Anyway, let’s take a quick look now at a few different ways you can repurpose a single piece of content – plus a few tools that can help you with this. So, one of the first things you want to consider is different mediums. Let’s say there are 3 basic forms: text, audio and video.

If you’re a blogger, you might consider turning a blog post into a podcast or a video. If you’re a podcaster, you could turn an episode into a blog post or video, and the same goes for vloggers – you can turn a video into a blog post or podcast. So, these formats are not exclusive anymore; it’s kind of a content round-robin and there are definitely tools that can help you with this too. Like Audacity – this is free recording software that you can use to turn a blog post into a podcast episode. Just hit record, start talking, and then upload your recording onto a platform like Soundcloud.

Add some intros & outros, and the rest are just details. You can also use Audacity to strip down the audio from one of your videos and then reformat it into an mp3 for your podcast. And Trint is a transcription tool that you can use to turn your podcast or video into a blogpost. The AI automatically generates a transcription of any file that you upload, and then you can edit it, format it, and add some images to turn it into a blog post. Or you can even use YouTube to get text from your audio or video files.

Just upload your file onto YouTube, and then have subtitles that you can then download, edit, format and turn into a blog post. And it’s actually not that much more complicated to turn a blog post into a video anymore either. Tools like Lumen5 use AI to simplify the process. Basically, it will scan your blog post, summarize it and then match it with relevant images and videos from their library. It’s actually pretty easy now to take a single piece of content and repurpose it for various mediums with the right technology.

And a 2nd way to repurpose your content – this time, staying within the same medium: the most popular one, text – is with roundup posts. There are 2 main types of roundup posts: Content roundup and Expert roundup. The content roundup is when you feature a few of your best articles inside a single post. Usually, the titles for this sound like “Best makeup application techniques of the month” … or something like that. An Expert roundup is when you compile a bunch of expert tips into a single post. This is usually a little more effective than a content roundup because people are more eager to share content when they’re mentioned, and this can give your post huge social media reach if the experts you mention happen to be influencers. Plus, it’s a great way to repurpose content from all those interviews that you’ve conducted.

And a 3rd way that you can repurpose content is by republishing or syndicating it on different platforms. While this can be an effective way to boost referral traffic and brand awareness, you definitely want to watch out for content duplication; if you have several versions of one piece of content lying around, Google can get confused about which version they should show people – even if the version from YOUR site is the original. We’ll talk about content duplication and what to look out for inside another video. So, these are just a few ways that you can take a single piece of content and make it work in different mediums and on various platforms. But the most important part of content repurposing is your strategy.

Some of the content that you create is going to be real-time, so people will only be interested in a limited time. And other content will be more evergreen, on topics that consistently generate interest. I recommend repurposing evergreen content only. After all, the whole point of repurposing content is to save time, energy and resources that would otherwise have to be spent on creating brand new content. It would be pointless to repurpose content that won’t have an audience in a few months anyway. So, definitely prioritize your evergreen content, and not just for content repurposing either. Anyway, that’s it for today. If you have any questions or know of even more ways to repurpose your content, definitely share it in the Comments section below. And if you found this video helpful, feel free to Like, Share and Subscribe to our YouTube channel where I will be explaining how you can do even more in social media & digital marketing each week.

Digital Blood Pressure Monitors

Your Complete Guide to Digital Blood Pressure Monitors: Making Health Monitoring Simple

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and when it comes to monitoring your cardiovascular health, nothing could be truer. Gone are the days when checking your blood pressure meant scheduling a doctor’s appointment and sitting in a waiting room. Today’s digital blood pressure monitors have revolutionized home healthcare, making it easier than ever to keep tabs on your heart health.

Why Digital Blood Pressure Monitors Are Game-Changers

Let’s face it – visiting the doctor every time you want to check your blood pressure is about as convenient as trying to fold a fitted sheet. Digital blood pressure monitors offer a practical solution that puts the power of health monitoring directly in your hands. These electronic devices are particularly beneficial for individuals who aren’t familiar with traditional manual blood pressure testing methods.

The beauty of home monitoring lies in its convenience and consistency. You can track your readings regularly, maintain accurate records, and arrive at your doctor’s appointments armed with valuable data. As one cardiologist noted, “Regular home monitoring provides a more complete picture of a patient’s cardiovascular health than occasional office visits.”

Features That Make Digital Monitors Stand Out

Modern digital blood pressure monitors come packed with user-friendly features that would make even the most tech-savvy gadget enthusiast smile. These devices typically include:

Display and Readout Options

Most digital monitors feature built-in LCD screens that clearly display your readings – no squinting required! The digital readouts eliminate guesswork and provide precise measurements that are especially helpful for individuals with hearing difficulties or vision impairments.

Cuff Varieties and Convenience

Digital monitors offer flexibility with both manual and automatic cuff options. Many models feature self-inflating cuffs that do all the work once you’ve secured the device and pressed the power button. Some innovative designs even allow for wrist or finger readings, though arm cuffs generally provide the most accurate results.

These monitors are sophisticated enough to detect blood flow patterns beneath the cuff, ensuring reliable measurements every time. It’s like having a mini laboratory right at your fingertips!

Documentation Features

Many digital blood pressure monitors include paper printout capabilities, providing you with tangible records to share with your healthcare provider. Think of it as your blood pressure’s report card – one that your doctor will actually want to see.

Ensuring Accuracy: Size Matters and Location Counts

Here’s where things get serious – and we’re not just talking about your blood pressure readings. The accuracy of your monitor depends heavily on proper cuff sizing and placement. Using the wrong cuff size is like trying to wear a size 8 shoe when you’re a size 10 – it’s just not going to work properly.

To verify your monitor’s accuracy, compare its readings with those from a professional-grade device during your next medical visit. As healthcare professionals recommend, “Digital blood pressure monitors should be calibrated and tested for accuracy at least once annually to ensure reliable readings.”

The Bottom Line on Digital Blood Pressure Monitoring

Investing in a quality digital blood pressure monitor is like having a personal health assistant that never takes a day off. These devices offer convenience, accuracy, and the peace of mind that comes with regular health monitoring. Whether you’re managing hypertension or simply staying proactive about your cardiovascular health, a digital monitor makes the process as simple as pressing a button.

Remember, while home monitoring is incredibly valuable, it should complement – not replace – regular check-ups with your healthcare provider. After all, even the best technology is most effective when combined with professional medical guidance.

How to Fix Error 404 Not Found on Your WordPress Site

Hello. And today we will go over how to fix the error 404 not found on your WordPress site. Of the many potential errors, you might see on your WordPress site. Error 404, not found is one of the tamer ones but that doesn’t mean it isn’t frustrating when you or your visitors try to browse your site and keep running into the error 404, not found message. That’s the last thing you want first time potential customers seeing from your brand.

Before we get too far, I winna let you know that there will be links to more resources in the video’s description. And remember, subscribe and ring that bell to get notifications for future helpful content. All right, let’s get started. Whenever you or one of your visitors visit your website, your browser sends a request to the web server and receives back data including something called an HTTP header. The HTTP header includes HTTP status codes to explain what happened with their request.

Most of the time, the request works perfectly and you never actually see the HTTP status code unless you go looking. But if something goes wrong your web browser will usually display a message with the HTTP status code to indicate the exact problem. Just like other error messages, 500 error, 502 error, 504 error, et cetera. The error 404 not found message is the result of that process. Basically, it means that the client was able to successfully connect to the host, your website server, but it was unable to find the actual resource that was requested. Example, a specific URL or file name. For example, if someone tries to access your site.com/post name but you don’t have any content with the slug post name the visitor will then see a 404 error because even though your web server is functioning normally the resource that was requested doesn’t exist. It’s not just posts or pages either. Any asset missing can generate a 404 error on the server, such as a missing image file, missing JavaScript, missing CSS, et cetera.

If you see this error on all of your sites, content, it’s typically due to an issue with your WordPress sites, permalinks. If you only see it on an individual piece of content though, it’s most likely because you changed a piece of contents, slug without setting up a redirect. Additionally, the 404 error isn’t a bad thing. It’s only bad when it’s interfering with usability. And sometimes things are just out of your control. For example, sometimes a person might just type the wrong URL into their address bar. In that case, they’ll see a 404 error but there’s no actual problem with how your site is configured. This is actually the desired response and you can create your own custom 404 page to help get visitors to the right spot. We’ll show you how to later on. Because different browsers display error messages differently, you might see a different message for this error.

Other common variations include error 404, 404 not found, HTTP error 404, not found, page not found, the requested URL was not found on the server. The page cannot be found. We can’t find the page you’re looking for. The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know. The error 404, not found message is also unique in that many sites will actually create a custom page to address the error. Some WordPress themes also include custom 404 pages by default. For that reason, you might not actually see the error messages at all, because many sites will use funny or creative 404 pages instead. Here’s an example of our own 404 page at Kirsta. We include a search box in some of our recent blog posts to help visitors find what they might have been looking for.

We recommend you always include search functionality on your 404 page. Error 404 not found doesn’t have any inherent negative impact on SEO but it might have a negative impact depending on the reason for why the error is happening. For example, if a visitor just mistypes a URL and sees a 404 error, there won’t be a negative impact on SEO. But if you have individual errors because of broken URLs that will inhibit Google’s ability to properly crawl your site and have a negative SEO effect in that way. Additionally, if a permalink issue is still causing site-wide 404 errors, Google won’t be able to crawl any of your sites content.

In other words, always fix your 404 errors as soon as possible. Many don’t realize it, but sites that generate a lot of 404 errors can easily run into performance issues. As these responses, aren’t typically cached. We see this a lot on larger sites, and it can be a big problem, if you accidentally promote or get a surge of viral traffic to a 404 page. To minimize the impact of 404 requests on site performance we automatically cache 404 pages for 15 minutes. If you create a new page with the same URL as the cached page, we’ll automatically purge the cache. So, your visitors will be able to see the new page immediately. This means your site will be protected from PHP and CPU spikes caused by traffic to dynamic 404 pages. You are probably generating more 404 errors than you think. Our Kinsta APM tool can help you locate the exact pages returning to 404 errors.

You can also check 404 errors in Google search console or install a third-party plugin such as Redirection, which logs 404 errors. However, remember that plugins like these also have an impact on performance. It’s much better to rely on a server level tool. That’s why we provide these tools for all Kirsta clients. The reason these errors are bad is that many 404 pages are very resource intensive. For large sites you’ll want to avoid a heavy 404 page. Create a simple 404 template that avoids querying the database any further, if possible. All right, let’s talk about a couple of different methods to fix the error 404 not found message. Depending on whether it’s happening site-wide or to specific content. If you’re experiencing site-wide 404 errors when trying to access content the most likely cause is an issue with your permalinks or your htaccess file if your host uses Apache.

If you’re a Kirsta customer, we use NGINX. So, you can rule out the htaccess file as a possible cause. The easiest way to fix this is to update your permalink settings through the WordPress dashboard. All you need to do is go to settings and then permalinks and click save changes. You don’t need to make any changes. Clicking save changes is enough. If you’re experiencing 404 errors on a specific piece of content the issue is likely that you change the URL slug for that content or move that piece of content manually. For instance, you may have deleted the existing post and pasted it into a new post. Users then try to access the content at the old location and see a 404 page instead of the resource they were expecting. The best way to fix this is to automatically redirect anyone who tries to access the old location to the new location.

That way they’ll make it to the right spot without any 404 errors. It’s also good for SEO. If you move or rename a post without adding a redirect you lose all the domain authority attached to the backlinks pointed at that post. WordPress by default we’ll attempt to redirect change remove content, but it doesn’t always work and you should never rely on WordPress for this functionality. But don’t worry. There are several easy ways to set up redirects in WordPress. First, you can use the free redirection plugin to manage redirects from your WordPress dashboard. Once you’ve installed and activated the plugin, go to tools and then redirection and enter, the 404-page URL in the source URL box and the new location of the content in the target URL box. If you’re hosting with Kirsta you can also manage redirects from my Kirsta dashboard. Using Kirsta’s tool is actually a better way to go about it as the rules are implemented at the server level, which is a much more optimal way in terms of performance.

It also means one less third-party plugin you have to worry about. Go to the site you want to manage, then click on the redirects tab. To add a new redirect, click the large add redirect rule button. Finally, if your host uses the Apache server you can use HT access to set up redirects. The HT access generator site can help you generate the proper code to add to your sites HT access file. While you can do your best to prevent 404 errors by following these tips, it’s impossible to entirely eliminate 404 errors because some things are just playing outside of your control. To provide a more user-friendly error page. You can use one of the many, 404-page plugins. The free 404-page plugin lets you set up a custom 404 error page with a search box, important links and contact information. Another important feature of the 404 page plugin is that it doesn’t create redirects.

A 404 page should never be redirected to a physical page such as your site.com/404. The 404 errors should always be generated dynamically on the page in question. By including these elements, you give visitors the tools that they need to find their way to the right page. But remember, keep your 404-page light for better performance. Only include what is absolutely needed. Going forward, it can be beneficial to pay attention to which requests are causing 404 errors at your site. This can help you. Find broken links that are sending people to a nonexistent resource. These can be internal links or external links from other sites. You’d then want to do your best to fix those links if possible. See which pages Google is having trouble crawling. You’d then want to figure out why Google is trying to crawl a non-existent page and set up a redirect if needed. Troubleshoot performance related issues with 404 errors. Option one, Google Analytics.

If you use Google Analytics, you can set up a custom report to track 404 errors from external links. Option two, WordPress plugin. If you want to use a WordPress plugin the after mentioned Redirection plugin can help you monitor for 404 errors from your WordPress dashboard. Option three, third-party audit tool. You can also use a third-party audit tool like arfes to monitor for 404 errors on your WordPress site. You can even set this up to run on a schedule. Option four, Google Search Console. Lastly, you can track 404 errors that Google’s crawlers encounter in Google Search Console. This is by far one of the easiest ways. It’s also the best in terms of performance because it requires no third-party plugins or additional scanning against your site.

Once you verified your site with Google Search Console, go to coverage, then check the air details tab to view a list of 404 errors that Google has encountered. Google’s bots are already crawling your site on a regular basis. So why not simply take advantage of the data they already provide? 404 errors are never good for visitors; your brand and Google don’t like to see them either.
