Hey everyone! I’m going to be taking you through how you can build a parallax website in Veve without needing to write a single line of code so let’s jump into it. Parallax scrolling continues to be one of the most popular trends in modern web design, bringing instant depth, dimension, and wow factor to websites. While it looks complex, parallax is actually pretty simple and with the introduction of no-code tools like Veve, you don’t even need to know a developer or learn how to code to start using it. Parallax scrolling is a web design technique where the background content (most commonly an image) moves at a different speed to the foreground content when scrolling.
This creates an optical illusion making the brain think that the content of a page is moving in a 3D space as you scroll through a site. Inside of Vev, there are a handful of pre-coded components that allow you to enhance your projects by implementing these parallax techniques. The first component that we’re going to take a look at is Multi-Layer Parallax. This allows you to create a parallax effect using a group of images moving at different speeds. To add it to your project, head over to the Add menu and search for “Multi-Layer Parallax”, select it, and click anywhere on your canvas to add the section.
By default, this landscape image of mountains and a skier will appear. This example has three layers to it. By double-clicking the section you can open up the configuration modal where you can edit these layers to create your own multi-parallax design. Bear in mind you will need to upload PNGs with transparent elements within them to be able to see all the layers in a single space. Let’s break down the default asset as an example.
Layer 1 – Background image of the entire mountain view Layer 2 – Middle ground view of the mountains Layer 3 – Foreground view of some snow and skier with your assets uploaded, you can see that we can switch between layers and change their settings. Within each layer, you can set the amount of scroll that occurs from 0% to 100%. If a layer is set to 100% this will remain completely static—the same sort of effect you get from using a sticky background section. If set to 0%, the layer will scroll at the normal page speed. In order to achieve the parallax effect you will need to ensure all three layers are using different scroll speeds.
We suggest the background be set to a higher percentage and incrementally reducing the scroll percentage with each layer the closer you move forward. In this example, the background layer is set to 100%, the middle layer is set to 70%, and the foreground layer is set to 50%. Taking the same concept we’ve just learned and applying it to something simpler and more accessible to most creatives is Image Parallax. This section allows you to create a parallax background set to a scrolling speed of your choice, while content in the foreground scrolls at a normal speed. This is the most popular type of parallax scroll you will see on a variety of websites and is an easy way to add depth to your site with very little effort.
Once again, go into the Add menu, search for “Image Parallax”, select it, then click anywhere on the canvas to add it. Once added, head over to the Style panel on the right-hand side and find “background”. Select the “IM” row and then hit the “Change Image” button. You’ll then be taken to the image gallery modal where you can select an existing image in your project, upload your own, or select one from the royalty-free Unsplash or Pixabay galleries. With your image added, you can now see that you have an image parallax in your project ready to go by scrolling up and down.
To adjust the amount of scroll, just double-click the section to open the configuration modal. Here you can set the scroll amount between 0% and 100%. To achieve the full effect, add content to the foreground of the section. Finally, Scroll Speed. This add-on can be attached to any element in your project to override the default scroll speed of your foreground content.
You can pair this alongside content with a normal scroll speed to create some interesting effects. In this example, we’ve added scroll speed to the image on the left-hand side. To attach an add-on, select the element you want to apply it to and head over to the top menu. When an element is selected, this puzzle-piece icon will appear to indicate you can attach an add-on. Click this to open Vev’s add-on library and then select “Scroll Speed”.
With the scroll speed add-on applied, the configuration modal will open allowing you to adjust a few settings, including the scroll speed, with 100% being the normal speed. You can even make an element scroll in the opposite direction by setting this to a minus value. So get experimenting! Using a variety of these techniques throughout your project will add an extra element of depth and interest to your design. You can find the complete template for today’s parallax website inside Veve to take a closer look at how all the sections we’ve covered fit together. You can also easily copy and paste sections from our template directly to your own projects.
