Thanks for joining me today how to build an audience for your blog oh wow you have great things you have written you are a great blog writer you’re consistent you need more people to read it well let’s talk about how we can do that and I’m going to share with you how I’ve done that over a decade of building my readership as a blogger so first of all you need to choose your topic this might seem like a basic thing but I’ll be candid with you a lot of people write a blog and it’s about nothing or everything your readers really want to have something that they can come to and say oh.
I know this is what I’m going to get today mine is called the promise it actually started as the commitment to Joy and it eventually turned into the promise after I refined my message a bit more and I was able to articulate it better I would love it if you would go check out my blog and here’s how you sign up for it you ready you go to Jason hit.com c m the reason you go there is because that’s where I lead everybody when I’m speaking to go to that page they sign up for that where they can get a worksheet about identify clarify magnify a really cool assessment form that’ll change the way that you even identify for yourself what you’re blogging about so you need that worksheet anyway and then when you’re there you’ll get the opportunity to sign up for the blog the blog comes out every single Sunday morning I’m going to talk a little bit more about that as well.
I hope you’ll go check it out and when you write you need to consider what it’s about and how it helps the reader for example there’s plenty of things you could be writing about you could write about things you’re most interested in or what the audience wants to read it just depends on how you want to handle your readership but when it comes to considering what the audience wants that can actually help quite a bit with what you’re going to be writing in your blog I recommend it not just be a personal journal entry place I mean that’s fine if that’s what you want to create but the readership will probably not grow most people’s lives are not you know something everyone wants to read about on a Blog but there’s a difference between the personal and the business side right so for example on the personal side I could write posts about well let me tell you some that have failed in terms of readership or interest from my readers when.
I write a blog post that’s personal about a family member having a birthday my readers don’t care even though I love that person I’m writing about they’re like we don’t care they don’t comment they don’t share it and the same happens as well with things like business if I go too technical on them and I say here are the 10 strategies to blah blah blah they don’t even open it and so I have to find a fine balance between personal and business that I want to share the thing that makes me sad is that my blogs about family and birthdays are really good and it’s like a eulogy to the person who’s alive they’re thrilled to get it but then the business post I’m really bummed that that’s not getting more readership and so all I just do is utilize that in other places in social media so I repurpose it elsewhere but the blogs that really get a lot of hits are very interesting and it’s a weird science so let’s go through some of how that works.
I want you to go to Jason hit.com blog and just go look at the Variety that I’m talking about even though it all comes back to the theme of keeping a promise so if you want to I would love for you also to put in the comments what your theme is i’ if you want to even put a link to yours I’d love to see your blog that would be awesome cuz I comment on every single one of these comments so let me see what you’ve got but go to Jason hit.com blog hopefully that’ll inspire you as to what you could write as well but what I’d like you to consider is including stories about other people where you could tag them or share it with them on their social media and then it’s almost like you’re collaborating with somebody else so I’ve done this for a long time where I would write about someone else and it would actually instead of a story about me be bigger than anything I could have written cuz Everyone likes a story about someone else.
I find that really interesting for example recently I’ve had articles such as the piano guys if you’re familiar with the piano guys they have a billion hits guy in a piano guy in a cello dear friends of mine and I wrote about them it got a lot of hits I wrote a story about called the helmet which is my son was supposed to have his helmet on on his bike ride of course he broke that promise and he smashed his teeth out of his face that is sad but that blog got a whole lot of views and comments people shared it all over the place cuz they all have kids that have done that to or they’ve done it themselves they related to it I have another blog that a lot of people loved called the shopping cart promise you can find all these like I say on Jason hit.com blog but the shopping cart promise is just the assumed promise that if somebody takes a shopping cart at the grocery store they’re going to return it to the cart spot and yet every time I pull into a parking lot at a grocery store there’s a shopping cart in the space already somebody’s left it in the middle of the parking lot so I said hey this this is a problem right am.
I the only one that thinks that we should keep the promise and return our carts this was started a firestorm it was hilarious but that got a lot of interest from my readers and then there was a one called the end of the bench it was about a boy who I saw on a basketball team that didn’t get to play for most of the year the coach never put him in even though this was a younger team it wasn’t like they were competing for a national championship and how I talked about how I knew what it felt like to be at the end of the bench when I was in high school as well that kind of a blog post went really big for me as far as comments and interest from people but it was about somebody else so finding the balance between writing about other people personal stories business those types of things I I shared a business principle within the promised shopping cart post but it’s interesting how it all has to be framed in sort of a real world situation and then writing topics and interesting titles is a big deal just like the shopping cart promise.
I mean that’s interesting to people and so writing something that’s kind of catchy is important to do and I’d like you to keep the promise IAL about that already but keep the promise and be consistent I send my blog out every Sunday morning at 5:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time now here’s the thing I chose that time because well I have another friend who writes a Sunday blog and after.
I had tried other days through the week I finally settled on Sunday because mine is more of a nature of uplifting it’s funny it’s poignant but it’s something that people can actually share in a church lesson on Sunday that day or they can share on Monday in a motivational meeting at their work and so Sunday morning for me became the right time I consistently have posted that now for over a decade and have never missed a week in fact one time I tried to trick my readers and I didn’t post it at 500 a.m. instead I posted at 5:00 p.m.
I got outrage emails all day through Sunday from people saying where’s your blog are you alive I was like wow I guess they’re reading so I tricked him I said hey I post this at 5 5 p.m. to see if you guys were paying attention that was funny but here’s what you need to realize if you commit to something like that if you commit to writing every single week and it’s on the same day oh then you’re going to run into some serious challenges I’ll admit Saturday night for me is usually a stressful time I’ll come home from a date with my wife and I’ll be you know laying in bed at 11:00 p.m. ready to snooze and then I go oh my blog and so keeping the promise that’s a real thing that I live and I talk about but it actually is a real nice way for me to be able to say oh I I know people are counting on getting this tomorrow morning I admit I have stayed up until 5:00 a.m. writing my blog before it was sent so let me tell you about my favorite blog it’s written by a guy named Jason kotki if you’ve heard me on other videos.
I talk quite extensively about Jason kotki and his wife Kim they started what’s called Escape adulthood and they’re all about making it so that we don’t feel like we’re adulting all the time they talk about play and having a wonderful fun life I love these people they’re Geniuses they’re the ones that I decided after seeing their Sunday post come out and it uplifted me before I went to my religious Services I thought I want to do something similar and so that’s why I write on Sunday is because of Jason kotki so I hope that you’ll go check out his website which is called escape adulthood. cblog the other guy I would really recommend you follow is a guy named Seth Goden Seth Goden has written a daily blog I leave for almost 3 decades ever since blogging was possible I don’t know if he’s ever missed in fact there are some days I’ll wake up and at 300 a.m. he’s already posted his blog it’s unbelievable I get it every day and I read it every day I do not throw it away that’s some seriously good writing and that’s a serious thing that he’s done go check out his blog and sign up for it and that’s under seth.
blog that’s where you can check that out I also have my post that goes out as a blog post and it goes out on Sundays like I said at 5:00 a.m. but guess what we do we also do a resend to people on Wednesday cuz some people don’t open their emails on a Sunday so we send a resend on Wednesdays and then guess what we also do on Wednesdays we post my blog as a post on LinkedIn as its own newsletter so every Wednesday people get it in my business World on LinkedIn it’s awesome so if you want to sign up for that go check out Jason huet on LinkedIn and grab my newsletter there now in terms of building your audience we’ve talked about the best ways as far as writing and some of the good ones that I follow but I want you to remember for yourself that some of the most important things you can do if you’re a speaker if you’re on stage is to capture audience’s attention and to lead them to your blog so just like I’m doing here I’m encouraging you to go check out my blog and the blogs that.
I like I hope that you’ll also do that for yourself so have an easy landing page a way for people to sign into your blog you can even have a QR code I’ve created some of these things in my presentation so that people can easily just take a picture of the screen and then they go right to my blog you can also share these as stories on social media so if I write something about the helmet I’m going to take the photo I’m going to say new blog post or an interesting line about it and then a link and put it in a story on Instagram or Facebook LinkedIn that leads people to the blog and you know there are stories that have recently been really interesting that people think I’m talking about in real time but it’s just an example for example middle seat I just wrote this this blog recently and middle seat is actually about a time when.
I had to choose a middle seat on an airplane even though I didn’t want to however the way that we captured the people going to that on social media as a post people thought I was going to miss my flight and so you can actually get people really interested and it’s a blog post from something that happened a year ago so it’s interesting how captivating the audience gets from the great lines and headlines that you lead them to finally let me tell you about how you can repurpose your blog so that it will actually generate more audience attention and interest recently my grandmother passed away and she had a wonderful life she was incredible she was a teacher and she did incredible things I wrote a post about her passing away and it it got some looks and then.
I wrote a story about the people that showed up at her funeral to play for it which was The Piano Guys The Piano Guys are very famous on YouTube if you haven’t checked them out go find them they’re amazing they do classical cinematic instrumental music on the cello and the piano on the top of Red Rock canyons and so forth they’re incredible their names are John Schmidt and Steven sharp Nelson I called both of them and said my Grandma had just passed away I shared this in a blog because they asked if they could be a part of her funeral and they showed up without anyone knowing everyone was shocked to see The Piano Guys at my grandma’s funeral and so this was such a special experience do you think that I only posted that as a Blog no this actually helped my audience to grow because it inspired people to think that the piano guys would show up at a funeral of my grandma that my grandma was their teacher that shocked everybody as well but it ties in perfectly to the promise the promise of the student to show up for the teacher the promise of the teacher to give their best to the student it all tied together beautifully so.
I’ve made videos about this I’ve made the blog post of chorus is the main place but it’s actually brought me an even bigger audience just because I’ve shared those things about other people stories that are interesting they all tie into my theme I hope this video has helped you and I hope that you’ll also commit to Growing your Audience by doing some of these things that we’ve talked about today thanks for joining me.
